- The substrate must be clean, dry and free from contamination prior to application.
- A suitable corrosion-protective primer must be applied to prepared steel to ensure long-term corrosion protection. Minimum primer thickness: 25 µm dry film thickness.
- Can be applied by spray, roller or brush.
- The paint should not be diluted with water.
- The required wet film thickness for the desired fire resistance is specified in tables in the technical datasheet.
- The paint must be thoroughly mixed using a slow-speed drill before application to avoid air entrapment.
Application properties:
- Application temperature: minimum +10 °C
- Tack-free after 1.5 hours at +23 °C
- Fully cured after 4 hours at +23 °C

Steel Paint FR-120 is an advanced, single-component acrylic-based fire protection coating developed to provide up to 120 minutes of fire resistance for load-bearing steel structures. It is specifically formulated for steel members with high section factors where conventional fire protection paints are insufficient.
The coating is easy to apply and normally does not require either a primer or a topcoat. It provides a smooth, lightly textured, non-reflective surface and is robust, durable, and well suited for internal use.
Typical applications:
- Load-bearing steel structures in all types of buildings
- Projects with fire resistance requirements R 60–120
- Steel members with high section factors
FR-120 is formulated using heat- and fire-resistant chemicals combined with intumescent pigments and fillers. When exposed to high temperatures, the coating expands and forms an insulating char layer that delays heat transfer to the steel.
What fire resistance can Steel Paint FR-120 achieve?
Depending on profile type, Ai/Vs ratio, and applied dry film thickness, the product can be documented from R 30 up to R 120. Refer to the technical data sheet for detailed tables.
Can Steel Paint FR-120 be used outdoors?
No. The product is developed for internal use only. External applications require alternative systems.
Can the paint be used in humid environments?
Not without a topcoat. In environments above C2, a suitable topcoat must be applied.
Is Steel Paint FR-120 available in all colours?
No. Steel Paint FR-120 is supplied in a white base only. If other colours are required, this must be achieved using a suitable topcoat. Any topcoat must be compatible with the system and adapted to the relevant environmental class.
Protecta Steel Paint FR-120 holds a European Technical Assessment ETA 24/0172 issued under EU Regulation 305/2011, based on 305/2011, based on EAD 350402-00-1106.
The product is tested in accordance with EN 13381-8 and EN 13501-1 for fire protection of load-bearing steel structures and is dimensioned using the Ai/Vs principle.
