- The substrate must be clean, dry and free from contamination prior to application. Remove all existing paint and coatings until a smooth, undamaged surface is achieved.
- Can be applied by spray, roller or brush.
- When applied by roller or brush, dilute with water (5% recommended, max. 10%) and adjust the wet film thickness (WFT) accordingly.
- The required wet film thickness for the desired fire resistance is specified in the technical data sheet and installation instructions for Protecta FR Board and Protecta EX Mortar.
Application properties:
- Application temperature: minimum +10 °C
- Tack-free after 1 hour at +22 °C
- Fully cured after 1.5 hours at +22 °C

Service Coat FR-1 is a solvent-free, intumescent fire protection coating that forms an insulating layer around cables, cable trays and metal pipes when exposed to fire. This reduces heat exposure to the installations and helps maintain function and circuit integrity during fire conditions.
The coating protects the outer plastic and rubber sheathing of cables, delaying damage to the conductors and supporting continued power supply. At the same time, it reduces the temperature of metal pipes passing through fire-rated penetrations, enhancing the overall fire resistance of the construction.
The product is developed as a high-performance thin-film system. It provides excellent coverage, high durability and a matt, smooth, non-reflective surface. Service Coat FR-1 is easy to apply, easy to clean and normally requires neither primer nor topcoat for internal use.
Typical applications:
- Cables and cable trays in fire-stopping applications
- Metal pipes penetrating fire-rated constructions
- Technical rooms and shafts
- Escape routes
- Buildings with requirements for functional integrity of electrical installations
What fire resistance can Service Coat FR-1 achieve?
Service Coat FR-1 is part of documented Protecta systems and can, depending on system build-up and combination with other products, contribute to fire resistance from EI 30 up to EI 120. Documented performance is stated in the technical data sheet and installation instructions for Protecta FR Board and Protecta EX Mortar.
Can Service Coat FR-1 be used outdoors?
Yes, but only when a suitable topcoat is applied. Recommended topcoats are listed in the technical data sheet.
Can the product be used in humid environments?
The product is not recommended for use in humid environments without a topcoat.
How much Service Coat FR-1 is required per square metre?
Consumption is determined by the required wet film thickness (WFT) in the documented system. For cable protection, a minimum of approx. 1,284 µm WFT is required, corresponding to approx. 1.28 litres per m². This is a dimensioning requirement for fire performance, not typical paint consumption. Refer to the technical data sheet and installation instructions for Protecta FR Board and Protecta EX Mortar for detailed film thickness requirements and documented solutions.
Is Service Coat FR-1 available in all colours?
No. Service Coat FR-1 is supplied in a white base only, meaning only light colours can be achieved. For external use, the desired colour can be achieved with a suitable topcoat. Any topcoat must be compatible with the system and adapted to the relevant environmental class.
Is the product resistant to moisture and frost?
The mortar must cure in dry conditions and be protected from frost. In humid environments, Protecta Waterproofer must be used.
Protecta Service Coat FR-1 has European Technical Assessments – ETA 22/0733 and ETA 22/0748 – issued under EU Regulation 305/2011, based on 305/2011, based on EAD 350454-00-1104.
The product is also tested for reaction to fire according to EN 13501-1 and for circuit integrity in accordance with IEC 60331.
All Protecta products are proudly developed and manufactured by [Polyseam Ltd]. To meet the demanding standards of modern construction, we continuously invest in rigorous testing and development in collaboration with leading laboratories.
Service Coat FR-1 is water-based with documented low environmental impact and long service life.
- Minimum 12-year service life – reduces waste and replacements
