- The substrate must be clean, dry and free from contamination prior to application.
- A suitable corrosion-protective primer must be applied to prepared steel to ensure long-term corrosion protection. Minimum primer thickness: 25 µm dry film thickness.
- Can be applied by spray, roller or brush.
- The paint should not be diluted with water.
- The required wet film thickness for the desired fire resistance is specified in tables in the technical datasheet.
- The paint must be thoroughly mixed using a slow-speed drill before application to avoid air entrapment.
Application properties:
- Application temperature: minimum +10 °C
- Tack-free after 1.5 hours at +23 °C
- Fully cured after 4 hours at +23 °C

Protecta Steel Paint FR-1 is a fire classified coating developed to protect load-bearing steel structures in the event of fire. When exposed to high temperatures, the coating reacts to form an insulating layer that delays the rise in steel temperature, helping maintain the structural stability of the element for up to 60 minutes, depending on the section factor and application thickness.
The product is designed for use on internal steelwork where both fire performance and visual appearance are important. It provides a smooth, consistent finish that can be incorporated into architectural designs where steel structures remain visible.
Application is carried out directly onto prepared steel substrates in accordance with the specified system build-up. Achieving the required fire resistance depends on correct film thickness, steel section characteristics and adherence to the tested and documented system.
Protecta Steel Paint FR-1 is suitable for a wide range of building types, including commercial, public and high-specification interior environments where passive fire protection must integrate with design requirements.
What fire resistance can Steel Paint FR-1 achieve?
Depending on the profile type, section factor (Ai/Vs ratio) and applied dry film thickness, the product can document R 30 and R 60. Refer to the technical datasheet for detailed tables.
Can Steel Paint FR-1 be used outdoors?
No. The product is developed for internal use. External applications require alternative systems.
Can the paint be used in humid environments?
Not without a top coat. In environments above C2, a suitable top coat must be applied.
Is Steel Paint FR-1 available in all colours?
No. Steel Paint FR-1 is supplied in a white base, meaning only light colours can be achieved. If darker colours are required, this should be achieved using a suitable top coat. Any top coat must be compatible with the system and adapted to the relevant environmental class.
Protecta Steel Paint FR-1 holds a European Technical Assessment ETA 21/1093 issued under EU Regulation 305/2011, based on 305/2011, based on EAD 350402-00-1106.
The product is tested in accordance with EN 13381-8 and EN 13501-1 for fire protection of load-bearing steel structures and is dimensioned using the Ai/Vs principle.
