WHAT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised document that provides transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products. Based on a life-cycle assessment (LCA), EPDs are developed following specific rules known as Product Category Rules (PCRs). This rigorous process ensures that all environmental declarations of products in the same category are based on consistent methods of measurement.
WHO USES EPDs?
EPDs are utilised by a wide range of stakeholders. Manufacturers like Polyseam use them to measure and communicate the environmental performance of their products. Consumers and professionals in the building industry, such as architects, designers, and contractors, refer to EPDs to make informed choices based on sustainability. Moreover, policymakers and governmental bodies use EPDs to set consistent benchmarks for product sustainability, helping guide regulations and standards for green building practices.
WHAT ARE EPD’S BASED ON?
The backbone of an EPD is the life-cycle assessment that evaluates the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance and disposal or recycling. By assessing a product over its entire life cycle, EPDs provide a comprehensive overview of its environmental implications, including emissions to air, water and soil, resource depletion and energy consumption.
WHY ARE EPDs IMPORTANT FOR PROTECTA PRODUCTS
Enhanced Transparency and Credibility: EPDs provide Protecta with a clear, unbiased and scientifically backed data about the environmental aspects of Protecta’s products. This transparency helps build trust with our customers and stakeholders who are increasingly conscious of environmental impacts in their purchasing decisions.
Environmental Commitment: It demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and compliance with international environmental standards, which can be decisive factors for consumers and businesses looking to fulfil green building certifications like LEED or BREEAM.
Continuous Improvement: The process of obtaining an EPD helps Protecta identify areas for environmental performance enhancement. This ongoing improvement can lead to more efficient use of our resources, reduced waste and better overall sustainability of our products.
Protecta’s commitment to issuing Environmental Product Declarations for our products, starting with the FR Acrylic, followed by the FR Board and EX Mortar signifies our dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. By embracing EPDs, Protecta not only meets international standards but also addresses the growing demand for eco-friendly building materials, paving the way for a greener future.
As we continue to expand our range of products with certified EPDs, we encourage our partners, clients and the broader community to join us in this vital journey towards sustainability. If you have any questions please contact us at customerservice@polyseam.com
