- FR Coating is primarily used for treating exposed surfaces of FR Board, especially in pattress-mounted fire-stopping applications.
- Ensure that the substrate is clean, dry and free from dust, grease and loose fibres prior to application.
- Apply FR Coating using a paint spray directly onto the mineral fibres.
- The coating must be applied evenly to the correct wet film thickness (WFT) in accordance with the documented system.
- All exposed board edges of FR Board must be fully covered to ensure documented performance.
Application properties:
- Application temperature: +5 °C to +50 °C
- Tack-free: max. 75 minutes
- Film formation: max. 25 minutes
- Fully cured: 3–5 days (depending on thickness and climate)

FR Coating is a water-based, halogen-free, ablative fire protection coating developed for mineral fibre-based fire-stopping systems. In the event of fire, the coating forms a protective layer that reduces the permeability of the stone wool and prevents the passage of flames, heat and smoke.
FR Coating is an integral part of the Protecta FR Board system and is developed to ensure that surface-mounted fire-stopping solutions maintain their documented fire resistance, even where board edges are exposed. The product is used both during the production of FR Board and by installers on site to ensure correct and documented performance in the finished solution.
The coating improves surface stability in the mineral fibres, reduces delamination and provides a robust substrate for further sealing. At the same time, the system contributes to maintaining fire resistance, air tightness and acoustic performance in the completed fire-stopping installation.

- Penetrations where FR Board is used as the fire-stopping element
- Solutions with requirements for documented fire, air and smoke resistance
FR Coating is developed as part of a complete fire-stopping system and must always be used in accordance with documented ETA solutions.
Which materials can FR Coating be applied to?
FR Coating is developed for use on mineral fibre and is specifically adapted for Protecta FR Board. The product is included in documented solutions where FR Board is installed against substrates such as concrete, masonry, steel, aluminium, timber and gypsum.
What fire resistance can be achieved?
Depending on the system build-up, solutions using FR Coating can achieve fire resistance up to EI 240. Refer to the installation instructions for FR Board for detailed solutions.
How much coating is required?
Typical consumption is approx. 1.0–1.2 litres per m², depending on the solution and required wet film thickness.
Is FR Coating intended for use on its own, without FR Board?
No. FR Coating is developed and tested as part of the Protecta FR Board system and must not be used as a standalone fire-stopping product.
Protecta FR Coating has European Technical Assessments – ETA 22/0307, ETA 22/0733 and ETA 22/0771 – issued under EU Regulation 305/2011, based on 305/2011, based on EAD 350454-00-1104 and EAD 350141-00-1106.
The product is tested in accordance with EN 1366-1, -3, -4 and -12, with reference to EN 1363-1.
