Expanded approvals strengthen one of the industry’s most comprehensive fire-rated acrylic sealant systems

Protecta FR Acrylic has received a major certification and approval upgrade, significantly expanding the already extensive scope of tested applications available for the system.

The latest upgrade introduces a wide range of new approvals, tested details and technical enhancements across penetration seals, linear joints, flexible constructions and service penetrations, further strengthening Protecta FR Acrylic as one of the most versatile and comprehensively tested acrylic fire sealants on the market.

The update includes major additions to the ETA, UKTA, installation instructions and supporting certification documents, providing specifiers, contractors and fire stopping installers with greater flexibility when dealing with complex site conditions.

Protecta Sandwich Panels

EXPANDED APPROVALS FOR SANDWICH PANEL WALLS

One of the most significant additions within the upgrade is the inclusion of a full set of approvals for sandwich panel walls. These approvals expand the suitability of Protecta FR Acrylic for modern construction methods where sandwich panel constructions are increasingly common across industrial, logistics, commercial and specialist environments.

Approvals for vertical linear seals within sandwich panel constructions can also be found within the UL-EU certification documentation. This provides greater confidence when designing and installing fire-stopping systems within lightweight composite wall constructions, where tested solutions are often limited.

FLEXIBLE FLOORS AND SUSPENDED CEILING APPLICATIONS ADDED

The new upgrade also introduces a full set of approvals for flexible timber floor constructions, including applications involving suspended ceilings. This is an important development for projects where fire-stopping systems must maintain compartmentation performance within lightweight floor structures and concealed ceiling voids.

As modern buildings continue to evolve towards lighter construction methods, tested approvals in these areas become increasingly important for maintaining compliance and protecting compartment lines.

REDUCED SEPARATION DISTANCES AND SMALLER ANNULAR GAPS

Protecta FR Acrylic now includes significantly improved separation distance allowances within tested configurations. Minimum distances between apertures have now been reduced to zero for classifications below EI 180 where supported by the tested detail.

This is particularly beneficial for modern building services where service density continues to increase and space within penetrations becomes more restricted. The upgrade also introduces approvals allowing annular gaps below 10 mm in certain tested applications, helping address situations where traditional sealing depths and clearances may not be practical on site. These additions provide installers and designers with greater flexibility while still remaining within tested and classified systems.

HOLLOW CORE SLAB FIRE SEALING ADDED

The ETA and UKTA documentation now includes guidance and approvals covering how to fire seal hollow floor slabs.

This has been added under Chapter 2 within the documentation and provides important clarification for projects involving precast hollow core floor systems where sealing approaches can vary significantly depending on the slab geometry and service arrangement

ADDITIONAL PIPE AND SERVICE APPROVALS

The upgrade also introduces a substantial number of additional service approvals, including:

  • Polybutylene pipes
  • Aquatechnik Tubi faser fiber-T pipes
  • Flexigas Double Sleeve pipes
  • Steel pipes with coat-back
  • Penetrating Unistrut channels
  • Large PEX pipe-in-pipe systems
  • Foam insulated PEX pipe-in-pipe systems
  • Ø159 mm copper pipes

These additions further extend the versatility of Protecta FR Acrylic across both standard and specialist service penetrations.

Protecta Product Documents

IMPROVED TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION AND TRACEABILITY

The technical documentation has also been enhanced to improve usability and traceability. Updates include:

  • Added reference numbers within detailed drawings
  • Easier identification of approvals within ETAs and UKTAs
  • Updated installation instructions
  • Added emission attestations within Annex C of the ETA and UKTA

These changes are designed to make it easier for installers, technical teams and specifiers to locate relevant tested details and supporting evidence quickly and accurately.

SUPPORTING REAL-WORLD CONSTRUCTION CONDITIONS

The latest upgrade reflects Protecta’s continued investment in testing and certification to support real construction challenges. Modern projects are increasingly dealing with:

  • Crowded services
  • Restricted apertures
  • Lightweight constructions
  • Suspended ceilings
  • Sandwich panel systems
  • Complex service combinations

This expanded certification scope helps provide tested and classified solutions for many of those conditions while maintaining the importance of system-based fire stopping. As always, installations must remain within the tested scope and follow the relevant installation instructions and classification evidence.
