Install the barrier on both sides of the compartment wall, aligned with the roof membrane. Ensure the graphite strip faces the air gap between the membrane and roof tiles to provide effective expansion in a fire.
- The system must be fixed securely to the supporting construction (timber studs, steel studs, concrete, masonry, or FR Board partition walls).
- Overlap the FR Membrane strips as specified in the installation instructions to maintain a continuous fire seal.
- Seal all joints with Protecta FR Acrylic or other specified sealants to prevent gaps.
- For rigid walls, the barrier should be anchored with approved fixings to the wall structure.
- Always follow the tested dimensions, overlaps, and fixing centres outlined in the Technical Assessment.
- Post-installation, ensure no damage or gaps remain that could compromise the barrier’s performance.

The Protecta® FR Membrane Barrier is a tested system providing up to 60 minutes fire resistance in linear voids between roofing moisture membranes and roof tiles. Installed alongside fire-classified partition walls in loft spaces, it prevents fire from spreading between compartments—helping to protect lives, animals, and property by containing the fire at its source.
Compatible with
- Flexible walls (min. 95 mm, timber or steel studs with 12.5 mm board each side)
- Rigid walls (min. 95 mm concrete or masonry)
- Protecta FR Board Partition Walls (ETA 23/0496)
The barrier is fitted on both sides of the partition wall and incorporates graphite strips that expand under heat, closing the gap between the roof membrane and tiles. Without this protection, fire can bypass compartment walls through the open void above.
What fire resistance does the Protecta FR Membrane Barrier provide?
The FR Membrane Barrier delivers up to EI 60 (60 minutes of integrity and insulation) when installed to both sides of partition walls in roof cavities.
How does the system work during a fire?
The barrier incorporates graphite strips that expand under heat, sealing the air gap between the roofing membrane and roof tiles. This prevents fire and smoke from bypassing compartment lines and spreading between loft compartments.
What are the installation requirements?
- Installed on both sides of the partition wall with fixings ≤200mm centres.
- A 5mm air gap in front of the graphite strip must be maintained to allow full expansion.
- Joints should be sealed with Protecta FR Acrylic.
- The system can close gaps of up to 25mm between roofing membranes and tiles.
The Protecta FR Membrane Barrier has been fire tested in accordance with EN 1366-4:2021 (Fire resistance tests for service installations – Part 4: Linear joint seals).
The product is tested according to EN 13501-2:2016, the barrier is classified up to EI 60 depending on the construction.
All Protecta products are proudly developed and manufactured by Polyseam Ltd. To meet the demanding standards of modern construction, we continuously invest in rigorous testing and development in collaboration with leading laboratories.
The FR Membrane Barrier incorporates Protecta FR Board, a product with documented low environmental impact and a long service life. The system is highly adaptable to different building requirements, though certain components may not be suitable for projects with the most stringent indoor climate standards.
- Minimum 25-year service life – reduces waste and replacements
- Boards and sealants contain no hazardous chemicals
- Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) available – covers the full lifecycle from raw material to disposal
