A dedicated, tested firestopping solution for CPVC sprinkler pipe penetrations
Protecta is pleased to launch Protecta FR CPVC Sealant, a new fire-resistant sealant developed specifically for use around compatible CPVC fire sprinkler pipes, including Lubrizol BlazeMaster® systems.
The product brings together tested fire resistance, demonstrated material compatibility and straightforward installation—giving contractors, fire-stopping specialists and specifiers a clearly defined solution for CPVC sprinkler penetrations.
WHY CPVC REQUIRES A DEDICATED SOLUTION
Where sprinkler pipes pass through fire-rated walls and floors, the opening must be correctly firestopped to help maintain the fire resistance of the compartment. With CPVC pipework, fire performance is only part of the specification. The chemical compatibility of every material placed in direct contact with the pipe must also be considered.
Some sealants and other construction materials can contain substances that may adversely affect CPVC over time. A firestopping product should therefore not be assumed suitable simply because it provides the required fire resistance. The FBC™ System Compatible Program was established by Lubrizol to identify ancillary products that have been independently assessed for compatibility with its CPVC piping systems. Products entering the programme undergo third-party testing, formulation controls and ongoing manufacturing audits.
Protecta FR CPVC Sealant has been developed to address both essential requirements:

DEVELOPED FOR CPVC SPRINKLER PENETRATIONS
Protecta FR CPVC Sealant is a ready-to-use, acrylic-based firestopping sealant formulated for applications around CPVC sprinkler pipes. Its application-specific chemistry has been independently tested and shown not to have a deleterious effect on CPVC pipe material. The sealant has been tested by NSF in the USA and is approved for use with Lubrizol BlazeMaster® fire sprinkler pipes.
When exposed to fire, the sealant forms a durable intumescent char that helps resist the passage of fire and smoke through the penetration. The launch follows extensive product development and compatibility work, building on the independent testing previously undertaken by Polyseam.
Third-party assessed fire performance
Protecta FR CPVC Sealant is supported by European Technical Assessment ETA 26/0454 and UK Technical Assessment UKTA 26/0001. The penetration seal systems have been tested in accordance with EN 1366-3 and classified under the relevant European fire resistance standards. Tested applications provide fire resistance of up to EI 180, depending on the supporting construction, pipe dimensions and system configuration.
Approved solutions are available for a range of wall and floor constructions, including:
- Flexible and rigid walls
- Rigid floors
- Panel and timber walls when used with Protecta FR Board
- Flexible floors when used with Protecta FR Board
- Selected systems incorporating Protecta FR Board or Protecta EX Mortar
Tested configurations are available for CPVC pipes with outside diameters of up to 73mm, depending on the selected system. All applications must be installed in accordance with the relevant Protecta technical documentation and tested system detail.
TESTED BLAZEMASTER® SLEEVE APPLICATIONS
Protecta FR CPVC Sealant has also been tested in applications where a BlazeMaster® CPVC sprinkler pipe passes through a BlazeMaster® CPVC sleeve. Sleeves are commonly used to form or protect service openings as pipework passes through walls and floors. When CPVC sleeves are used, the compatibility and fire performance of the complete penetration seal, including the pipe, sleeve, annular gap and fire stopping materials—must be considered.
The Protecta assessment includes tested sleeved configurations providing:
- Fire resistance of up to EI 60 in flexible and rigid walls
- Fire resistance of up to EI 120 in rigid floors
- BlazeMaster® CPVC sleeves with outside diameters of up to 73mm, depending on the tested configuration
The tested wall systems incorporate Protecta FR CPVC Sealant around the CPVC pipe and sleeve. Selected rigid-floor systems combine Protecta FR CPVC Sealant with Protecta EX Mortar. Pipe size, sleeve diameter, annular gap, sealant depth and supporting construction must correspond with the relevant tested system. Installers and specifiers should always consult the latest Protecta installation instructions and approval documentation before work begins.

The sealant is supplied in 310ml cartridges and is available in white and grey. Protecta Eco-Foil packaging is also available as an option.
CLEAR PRODUCT SELECTION ON SITE
Protecta FR CPVC Sealant provides a distinctive, application-specific product for installers working with CPVC sprinkler systems. For approved Protecta CPVC penetration seals, only Protecta FR CPVC Sealant should be placed in direct contact with the CPVC pipe. Aperture size, pipe diameter, seal depth, supporting construction and any required backing or additional Protecta products must correspond with the tested system.
This gives contractors and specifiers a clearly documented route from product selection through to installation and inspection.
